Spring brings hope and sunshine, flowers and longer days; but also if you ask me, a sartorial challenge. Not yet warm enough for Summer clothes, and the entire country thoroughly fed up of jumpers and big coats, this season sometimes feels like fashion no man’s land.
The answer? Clever layering. From Spring jackets to fresh shoes, a pop of colour and more, walk this way for my take on layering up for Spring. Kick start your everyday look, using simple updates, taking you from Winter to Spring/Summer with stylish ease.
Invest in a Mac
My favourite Spring coats are from Protected Species, a brand offering high performance functionality paired with sleek style. I have their classic Mac in grey and additionally, the shorter Commuter in dark olive. Layered over a faux fur gilet on chillier spring days, these coats are lightweight but robust too.
Choose tones to work with your palette, and add in an extra layering option which can be easily bundled into your oversized bag on the move. Waterproof for April showers, you’ll wear an investment Mac for several years to come.
Showcase statement trainers
Whether you prefer a simple trainer style or flash of bold print, this flat footwear has never been more popular. Be it Adidas Stan Smiths, New Balance kicks, Nike or independent brands such as Air & Grace, there are so many trendy trainer picks.
Throw on a Summery dress, worn with tights and sneakers, plus a lightweight jacket as your outerwear layer. Put a long-sleeved top under a strappy vest, worn alongside ripped jeans and box-fresh trainers. Elegant and on-trend, say goodbye to your boots as this is the shoe buy of the season.
Add a luxurious scarf
Scarves are such a versatile style option, and Becksondergaard beauties always top this list. Their oversized numbers wrap around you like a warm blanket, no matter what other clothing you have on. Explore the Danish designer brand’s vast array of vibrant and muted tones alike, shopping your favoured prints and textures.
Providing an instant boost, a scarf also requires very little outfit planning if you’re in a rush. Swathe yourself in colour or contrast its print with your clothes, embracing whichever layering look you prefer. The main hook for me here is fallback warmth on an unexpectedly cold Spring day. I should mention that I’m one of those people who are always cold, and a Becksondergaard scarf is my best accessory friend.
If in doubt, buy a bright lipstick
A slick of bright lipstick never fails to lift, offering a style update with very little effort. Dress up an everyday outfit and focus on a red lip, taking you from desk to bar if you fancy. Even just for a run up the high street or if you’re popping over to a friend’s, shed Winter dullness and flash a colourful pout.
My current staple lipstick buys are Clarins Joli Rouge for hydration and softening, or Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Paint On Liquid Lipcolor, which is available in several shades and simply does not budge.
